Album Overview:

OBViOUS-ly Live (2000)

At the end of 1999, the world seemed a dark place. Y2K had scared the bejeebers out of everyone and the new millenium had everyone guessing.

The band had it's own problems; Brad's father was seriously ill, mr christopher's marriage was in trouble and Tim's bussiness was in uncertain affairs. Finally mr christopher made the unpopular call for a "time out". The band didn't talk to each other for almost 6 months.

It was during this time that mr christopher reviewed the tapes of their last few shows from their epic sweep of 1999. Some recordings were on multitrack and could be remixed, some where where just cassette mixes of some priceless performances.

The multitrack tapes where from a November 12, 1999 performance and were badly recorded by the resident sound company, but mr christopher saw some potential if some time was taken with the best cuts.

Dealing with broken microphones, distorted tape levels from a gig recorded after an all-night session, mr christopher took his time and worked through the Spring 2000, which he found that Y2K hadn't taken any toll of.

Soon "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" began to take shape. About 16 tracks came together with material taken from rehearsals and forgotten studio sessions to fill a now legendary but no longer available 79 minute bonus disc.

"OBViOUS-ly LiVE"'s artwork came from a different place. mr christopher utilized, for the first time, some 3D graphics to bring the OBViOUS TV to life with some depth to encase the 2-disc set.

Finally in May 2000, an "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" release party brought Tim and mr christopher back together for the first time. A fun time was had by all as "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" played some times in the background, but usually at full throttle.

Bradley received his copy later, as he was out of town and missed the party.

All OBViOUS guys came to have special affection for the "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" as it captured some very special moments shared by not just the band members but also the fans, the people at the show who heard some of this stuff go down as it happened ....obviously live.

A bit about the gigs:

This album contains songs recorded live at the outdoor Melbourne Friday Festival on November 12th, 1999, and at a club called Hotel California in Malabar, Florida, December 11, 1999.

Friday Festival was a monthly event in the city of Melbourne Florida. The November Friday Festival  was the last one of the year, of the century for that matter. The OBViOUS was chosen to pull out all the stops to bring it all down with a bang. They were determined not to disappoint, choosing the gig to release their newest album "2OBViOUS!" on the day as well.

It all came together very nicely.

Problems... as there always are, problems arose. The sound company was a bit flaky and the sound that day was not perfect. mr christopher had sprung some kind of arrangement with the company to provided free recording of the show as an incentive to use their services. Well the result wasn't exactly what they'd had hoped for.

Also adding to the mix was mr christopher staying up all night finishing the CD album cover and making sure that copies were going to be available at the show. He did somehow manage to get a few hours of sleep before singing three 45 minute sets.

In the end, turnout was good, the weather was beautiful, CDs were sold and mr christopher was somehow able to get 16 tracks of rocking OBViOUS tunes to make a pretty memorable CD.

The Hotel California gig was a fluke. The band had been quickly booked two nights at the last minute to help the band The Magnets deal with their over booking.

With little time to advertise, the band gave it their best shot and decided to make the event a Christmas party as well. They hired a Santa, had a Christmas raffle and even worked up their own OBViOUS version of "Rudolf" which they had put out as an internet single and sent to local radio stations earlier in November.

There was a lot tension however as the whole promotion and production was all done last minute and everyone's holiday stress level was already peaked.

The tension however created a fire in the band that night as they rocked the house impressing and shocking even themselves. Songs were extended, the improvisation was amazing, the groove was thicker than ever and the vocals were passionate. It was a magical night.

The band came off the stage that night on a natural high, but it was to be the last time they would play live together for the next 13 months.

However "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" captured several moments of that nights spontaneity and energy and preserves it and let's you experience it as close to what a first-hand experience must have been like.

A bit about the songs:

01. Every Moment  (mr christopher) - 3:00
A song from the first OBVIOUS album, alway played live with a funkier groove as demonstrated here.

02. She's Got Everything  (ray davies)- 2:17
A Kinks/Romantics cover. The cloth from which many OBViOUS originals were cut from.

03. Fan Piao  (mr christopher) - 2:22
Even better than the "2OBViOUS!" version!

04. Bring It To Light  (mr christopher) - 4:20
The OBViOUS recorded two live versions that day. This was the quirkier "reggae" version.

05. All the Tea In China  (mr christopher) - 3:31
The single from the first OBVIOUS album, presented pretty faithfully here.

06. Dogfight Funk  (mr christopher) - 2:31
A very energetic interpretation of the "2OBViOUS!" instrumental track.

07. Spy Movie Medley  (various)- 2:59
A "live only" song, combining Peter Gunn, James Bond, Get Smart and other spy movie music cliches into a most entertaining OBViOUS performance featuring Bradley on vocals. Usually including a combination of electric guitar and guitar-synth work by mr christopher, this performance was straight electric guitar.

08. Rapper's Delight  (the sugar hill gang) - 6:01
The OBViOUS weave this wild funkified version of this the "mother of all Rap songs" into a band track that introduces each OBViOUS guy.

09.  The Sooner The Better  (mr christopher) - 4:09
A great live audience participation song from the "2OBViOUS!" album.

10. Gaze In Your Eyes  (mr christopher) - 4:37
One of two ballads performed this night from the landmark first OBViOUS album.

11. I Want To Hold Your Hand  (lennon/mccartney/morley)- 3:55
The Beatles meet Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher"? A live interpretation of The OBViOUS' internet single from the Summer of 1999, complete with dropped drum stick!

12. What In The World?  (mr christopher) - 3:50
Another rocker from the first OBViOUS album.

13. I Can't Explain  (pete towshend)- 2:59
A huge musical nod to the band that inspired us all : The WHO cover to end all Who covers! Understand? Sorry, I can't explain.

14. Life Goes On  (mr christopher) - 3:20
The live introduction to this song (from first OBViOUS album) took all year to get right, finally came together on this night.

15. It's Much Too Soon To Say  (mr christopher) - 2:55
More ballading from the band that can take it from one extreme to the next. This time from first OBViOUS album.

16. That'll Be The Day  (buddy holly)- 3:19
A "guilty pleasure" covering Buddy Holly's first 1957 hit single, performed here by the 3 maniacs in The OBViOUS at twice the normal speed.
