A bit about the
gigs:
This album contains songs recorded live at the outdoor
Melbourne Friday Festival on November 12th, 1999, and at a club called
Hotel California in Malabar, Florida, December 11, 1999.
Friday Festival was a monthly event in the city
of Melbourne Florida. The November Friday Festival was the last one
of the year, of the century for that matter. The OBViOUS was chosen to
pull out all the stops to bring it all down with a bang. They were determined
not to disappoint, choosing the gig to release their newest album "2OBViOUS!"
on the day as well.
It all came together very nicely.
Problems... as there always are, problems arose. The sound
company was a bit flaky and the sound that day was not perfect. mr christopher
had sprung some kind of arrangement with the company to provided free recording
of the show as an incentive to use their services. Well the result wasn't
exactly what they'd had hoped for.
Also adding to the mix was mr christopher staying up all
night finishing the CD album cover and making sure that copies were going
to be available at the show. He did somehow manage to get a few hours of
sleep before singing three 45 minute sets.
In the end, turnout was good, the weather was beautiful,
CDs were sold and mr christopher was somehow able to get 16 tracks of rocking
OBViOUS tunes to make a pretty memorable CD.
The Hotel California gig was a fluke. The band
had been quickly booked two nights at the last minute to help the band
The Magnets deal with their over booking.
With little time to advertise, the band gave it their
best shot and decided to make the event a Christmas party as well. They
hired a Santa, had a Christmas raffle and even worked up their own OBViOUS
version of "Rudolf" which they had put out as an internet single and sent
to local radio stations earlier in November.
There was a lot tension however as the whole promotion
and production was all done last minute and everyone's holiday stress level
was already peaked.
The tension however created a fire in the band that night
as they rocked the house impressing and shocking even themselves. Songs
were extended, the improvisation was amazing, the groove was thicker than
ever and the vocals were passionate. It was a magical night.
The band came off the stage that night on a natural high,
but it was to be the last time they would play live together for the next
13 months.
However "OBViOUS-ly LiVE" captured several moments of
that nights spontaneity and energy and preserves it and let's you experience
it as close to what a first-hand experience must have been like. |
